| Calcium's Expanded Role In Your Health
|
From:Better Life Institute Newsletter(betterlifeunlimited.com)
The Supplement to the May 2001 issue of Alternative Medicine Alert provides an excellent synopsis of the role of calcium in the body and in health and disease. Here are some of the things you should know about calcium:
>Calcium is involved in many important functions in the body including intracellular regulation, muscle cell function, hormone secretion, and enzyme activation.
>Bones and teeth contain more than 90% of the body’s calcium.
>Most adults do not consume sufficient calcium in their daily diet, and dairy consumption in the teenage years has declined.
>Good sources of calcium are not only dairy products—green vegetables, tofu, and canned fish with bones also contain significant amounts of calcium.
>Regular calcium supplementation may be a necessity for many people starting in their teenage years.
>Calcium is lost in the body through feces, urine, sweat, and sloughed skin cells.
>When ingested as part of a meal, calcium carbonate is absorbed as well as other forms of calcium.
>Calcium absorption changes throughout life. Age, environment, and dietary conditions all play a part in absorption.
>Calcium has been shown in studies to reduce the risk of colorectal cancer as well as osteoporosis.
>Calcium has also been shown to help in the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure), indigestion, and premenstrual syndrome (PMS).
>Calcium absorption is increased by vitamin D.
>As we’re living longer, osteoporosis is becoming a serious health challenge for the elderly. Current estimates are that over 8 million women and 2 million men in America already have osteoporosis; another 18 million men and women have low bone density that can lead to osteoporosis, not to mention all the other health challenges mentioned above. Therefore it’s important for all people to better understand the role of calcium in the body and why everyone needs adequate amounts of this important mineral in the daily diet.
Total calcium intake should be considered from all sources. Persons particularly at risk for calcium deficiency are those who don’t eat dairy products. If dietary intake isn’t sufficient, then a quality calcium supplement may be necessary to insure adequate intake.
